
Biography
Sophia Stoney, pianist
Hailing from Canada’s west coast, pianist and educator Sophia Stoney has been an active performer and teacher in the Ottawa–Gatineau region for over a decade. She holds a Master of Music in Piano Performance from the University of Ottawa, where she studied under Andrew Tunis and Dr. Leopoldo Erice. She earned her Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance from the University of Victoria, studying with Eva Solar-Kinderman and Michelle Mares. During her undergraduate studies, she also pursued collaborative piano and chamber music training with the Lafayette String Quartet. Sophia's passion for chamber music also led her to further studies with the Penderecki String Quartet and the AYR Trio at the QuartetFest program.
Throughout her training, she has performed in masterclasses for distinguished musicians including renowned harpsichordist Colin Tilney, acclaimed pianist Jerome Lowenthal of The Juilliard School, and David Lutz of the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna. Her musical studies have taken her to Europe, where she participated in masterclasses and private instruction with celebrated pianists Paul Roberts and Charles Owen of the Guildhall School of Music & Drama in London. As a performer, Sophia has appeared in numerous solo and chamber music recitals and has been involved in a variety of charitable concert initiatives, both as a performer and organizer.
In addition to performing, Sophia is a dedicated and experienced piano teacher. She holds pedagogy certifications from the Suzuki Association and the Gorin Institute of Piano Pedagogy and currently serves as Coordinator for the Suzuki Piano Association of Ottawa-Gatineau.
With more than a decade of teaching experience, Sophia is committed to helping students build a strong technical foundation through efficient and structured classical training while fostering a lifelong love of music. She tailors lessons to each student's individual goals, interests, and learning style, encouraging both artistic growth and technical excellence.
Sophia has extensive experience preparing students for auditions, examinations, competitions, and performances. Her students have been accepted into respected music performance programs, including those at the Conservatoire de musique du Québec and the University of Ottawa School of Music. They have successfully participated in examinations, national and international competitions, music festivals, and summer piano institutes, including the Steinway Competition, Kiwanis Music Festival, Ottawa Piano Festival, and the uOttawa Summer Piano Academy. Her students have earned numerous awards and distinctions, including opportunities to perform at Carnegie Hall's Weill Recital Hall.
Whether performing on stage or teaching in the studio, Sophia is passionate about inspiring meaningful musical experiences and helping students reach their full potential.
